I can’t say my past experiments with jet lag remedies have been very scientific. When I’m flying, I usually take an Ambien and listen to one of my own speeches on my iPod. I’m out in seconds. But it doesn’t always work, and sometimes you’ll have some funny moments from being overtired. There was an incident in New Orleans, at Mardi Gras, in 1997. But the video has been destroyed and I gave the beads back.

How the Convention Speeches Played on Twitter

The line in yellow on the chart above shows the number of tweets per minute about the Democratic convention during Wednesday night’s session featuring Bill Clinton. In red, tweets per minute on the equivalent night of the Republican convention last week, featuring vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan. Clinton’s Twitter traffic peaked at over 22,000 when he finished speaking and President Obama joined him at the podium. Ryan’s speech, by contrast, barely topped 5,000 at its highest point.

HuffPost Off The Bus bloggers used the new Convention Mention Meter to track talking points in real time, showing that the main focus of Tuesday’s remarks was the economy. The term was mentioned over 100 times in total, dropped into almost every speech and often discussed along with the need for a “robust” middle class. Newark Mayor Cory Booker mentioned the economy seven times, wrapping it into the platform motto in the first line of his speech: “Our platform, crafted by Democrats, is not about partisanship but pragmatism,” he said, “not about left or right, but about moving America and our economy forward.”

It is no surprise to voters that campaign speeches are tested in polls and focus groups to within an inch of their lives. So we decided to reverse engineer the campaign’s messaging by looking at the most commonly used expressions in the first four Biden campaign speeches. (The vice president delivered the fifth one today in New York on the topic of foreign policy.)
